How will ETS2 affect Central and Eastern Europe?
The EU’s new Emissions Trading System for buildings and road transport (ETS2), launching in 2028, will gradually increase the cost of fossil fuels for heating and transport while generating funding to support the clean energy transition. But what will this mean for households across Central and Eastern Europe?
In a new interview published by EUKI, ClimateFair Monitor experts Jonas Sonnenschein (Umanotera, Slovenia) and András Lukács (Clean Air Action Group, Hungary) discuss the opportunities and challenges of ETS2 for the region. They explain why vulnerable households will need targeted support, how the Social Climate Fund can help make the transition fair, and why investments in energy efficiency, cleaner heating and sustainable mobility are crucial alongside financial compensation.
The interview also highlights the importance of transparent use of ETS2 revenues, building public support for climate policies, and tackling misinformation that often surrounds the climate transition.
